3. Tragedy in Haiti, the 2010 Earthquake.

In January 2010 AIDG was working on the next edition of our business plan competition for Haiti, and was doing some biogas and sanitation projects, when a massive 7.0 earthquake struck Port Au Prince. After a quick investigation on how to help we focused on bringing teams of structural engineers into the country to help with building assessments and training for reconstruction.

In total we inspected over 1500 buildings with MCEER and KPFF. This work led to the development of a mason training program to help informal sector builders avoid repeating mistakes in rebuilding that could put structures at risk from a future earthquake. This was based on Chilean confined masonry techniques. The manual can be downloaded in both Kreyol and English. In total we trained over 4000 masons.
